October is Texas Archaeology Month, and the Jefferson County Historical Commission is hosting a regional workshop in celebration on Oct. 12 from 2-4 p.m.
Dr. Kerry Nichols, East Texas Historical Commission regional archaeologist, plans to discuss prehistoric, historic and cultural back- ground for Southeast Texas Archaeology. His presentation will cover the Paleoindian, Early Archaic, Middle Archaic, Early Ceramic, Late Prehistoric, Historic Native American and Historic Euro-American periods.
Nichols lives in Austin, but is the “regional archeologist for this area,” explained Brenda Jackson, retired teacher and a steward for the Texas Historical Commission.
Jackson has also organized an exhibit of artifacts this month in the Jefferson County
Courthouse from the David French house, excavated by Dr. Charles Bollich and Dr. Tommy Lamb in the early 1990s.
Nichols will also be talking about resource management projects at McFaddin Beach and Luce Bayou. McFaddin Beach, which stretches between Sabine Pass and High Island, is important to advocational archeologists like Jackson because fossils and rtifacts dating back to the Paleo-Indian period have been discovered there.
The event will be in the first floor Jury Impaneling Room of the Jefferson County Courthouse at 1085 Pearl St., Beaumont.
