A Harris County Sheriff’s deputy called for officer assistance after he was shot Monday morning.
Baytown Police received the call for help at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 3 in the 700 block of West Baker Road, Baytown Police Department said in a news release.
The officers who responded to the scene found Harris County Precinct 3 Assistant Chief Deputy Clinton Greenwood lying on the ground bleeding, and they gave first-aid at the scene. Greenwood was flown the hospital, but ultimately died of a single gunshot wound, officials said.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced later in the afternoon of April 3 that he is offering an additional reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of anyone involved in Greenwood’s murder. This reward is in addition to the Baytown Crime Stoppers award of $35,000, bringing the total amount offered to $50,000, according to the news release.
Abbott also offered his condolences and granted Harris County’s request to lower flags to half-mast in Greenwood’s honor.
“My heart goes out to the family and friends of Assistant Chief Deputy Greenwood and the Harris County law enforcement community in the wake of this heinous murder,” Abbott said in the news release. “Texas is taking action to strengthen penalties for those brazen enough to commit crimes against law enforcement, and we will send a message that such vile acts will not be tolerated in the Lone
Star State.”
“I am confident the perpetrator of this despicable act will be apprehended, and that the murderer will be met with swift justice,” Abbott said.
Other law enforcement agencies also offered their condolences.
“The entire Harris County law enforcement community is mourning the loss of Precinct 3 Assistant Chief Deputy Clint Greenwood,” the Harris County Sheriff’s Office posted on the department’s Facebook page. “Greenwood spent over 30 years in service to
Harris County as a peace officer, prosecutor and defense attorney.”
The department said they would remember Greenwood as “a beloved member” of the office, telling him to “rest easy brother, we have the watch.”
The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office responded with a statement conveying “their deepest sympathies” to Greenwood’s family and coworkers, calling his death a “senseless murder.”
